A Problem in Heaven

Long ago, the gods in heaven lost their powers because

of a curse.

Without strength, they could not protect the world.

They were worried and sad.

The wise god Vishnu said to them: “You must churn the

great ocean to find amrita - the drink that brings

strength and long life.”

But the task was too big for the gods alone. They

needed help.

So, they decided to work with the demons, even

though they were not friends.

Mount Mandara as the Churning Stick

The gods and demons chose a huge mountain - Mount

Mandara - to use as a churning stick.

But the mountain was too heavy to move. No matter

how hard they pushed, it did not budge.

The gods prayed to Vishnu for help. Vishnu appeared

and used his power to lift the mountain and place it in

the ocean. Now the churning could begin.
